Syrian crisis: Russia vows to intensify air strikes

Russia has pledged to intensify its air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, saying the bombing has significantly weakened the militants.

A Russian military official said "panic and desertion" had started among the militants and some 600 "mercenaries" were trying to escape to Europe.

However, Britain said Russia's strikes were supporting its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The West says Russia is also hitting non-IS rebels. Moscow denies the claim.

There have been reports that a number of Syrian civilians have been killed in the Russian air strikes, which began on 30 September.

The battle for the Presidency of New Democracy escalates

The main contenders Meimarakis,Tzitzikostas and Mitsotakis have formally submitted their candidacies.

Although the date for the election for a new President in New Democracy has not yet been finalized, the main contenders Evangelos Meimarakis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas have formally submitted their candidacies, along with backing of at least 50 members from the party’s political secretariat.

Adonis Georgiadis, who is has announced his intention to run for the party leadership and is considered the outsider in the electoral process, has not yet submitted his candidacy. The deadline for the submission of candidacy expires at 6pm on Friday.

The conservative party’s provisional leader Evangelos Meimarakis was the first to formally submit his candidacy in the party elections on Thursday and later gave a press conference at the Ledra Marriott hotel in Athens. Mr. Meimarakis argued that he has stood by the party in “both good times and bad times”.

On Friday morning, Mr. Mitsotakis submitted his candidacy and thanked the members of New Democracy’s political secretariat that supported him. Mr. Mitsotakis also commented that if elected he will guarantee that the party will come out united and strong. Later on in the day Mr. Tzitzikostas also submitted his candidacy and told journalists that he is “taking the lead, with my generation; we dare to hope”.

PM Alexis Tsipras returns to Athens and Greek political reality

A meeting of SYRIZA's parliamentary group has been arranged to take place on Saturday morning

After a week of meetings in New York, the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is returning to Athens and will be faced with the Greek political reality on Saturday morning, when a SYRIZA parliamentary group meeting has been called.

During Saturday’s meeting, the PM will set the framework of the coalition government’s policy statements, which, as announced, are expected on Monday. Everything suggests that Mr. Tsipras is going to emphasize his “parallel program” and claim that the bailout is a “necessary evil”.

By doing so, Mr. Tsipras will want to defuse any reactions from potential challengers within his party, although it should be noted that the policy statements tend to attract reactions from and clashes with the opposition parties, rather than from within the government. With the main opposition party New Democracy mostly focusing on its internal problems and election for a new leader, Mr. Tsipras is expected to focus on responding to the political criticism and pressure from PASOK and the River.
Beyond these immediate challenges, the SYRIZA president may also begin making plans for the ‘refounding conference’ for his party, which is likely to take place at some point in spring 2016. SYRIZA’s central committee will convene on the 11^th and 12^th of October to address unresolved inter-party issues, such as covering the empty positions in the political secretariat and electing a new secretary, with Panagiotis Rigas being the favorite.

Police locate sacks full of weapons and ammunition in Attica warehouse

The police has recoved sacks full of weapons and ammunition - including  two anti-armor weapons, two assault rifles and a number of pistols - in a warehouse located in Marathonas in Attica that is is being investigated.

The police also found eight stolen cars and two motorcycles on the premises. It appears that the warehouse had been rented out by Spyros Dravilas using a fake ID card.

The investigation came after searching houses and other buildings in Magnisia and Fthiotida, in relation to the arrest of Giorgos Petrakakos, his partners and two brothers.

In the Volos apartment where Petrakakos lived with his partner and two children the police recovered counterfeit ID cards, which were used to rent out other houses, warehouses etc, where it is believed that more weapons may be hidden.

So far, the ballistics tests on all weapons that have been recovered from the apartment in Volos and a farmhouse in Fthiotida indicate that they have not been used in any prior criminal activities.
